Kenya Mashujaa Day - October 20th

Mashujaa Day (Heroes' Day) is a national holiday in Kenya celebrated on October 20th. It was previously known as Kenyatta Day, commemorating the day Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya's first president, was arrested in 1952. After the promulgation of the new Constitution in August 2010, Kenyatta Day was renamed Mashujaa Day to honor all Kenyan heroes and heroines who contributed to the liberation struggle for Kenya's independence and those who have positively contributed to the nation since then.

History and Significance:

Originally, October 20th commemorated the arrest of Jomo Kenyatta and other leaders who were instrumental in Kenya's fight for independence from British colonial rule. These arrests were a significant event in the Mau Mau Uprising. With the renaming to Mashujaa Day, the scope of the holiday expanded to include all individuals who played a significant role in Kenya's history, including freedom fighters, political leaders, cultural icons, and other national heroes.
